Before the 1950s, Marlboro had only a 1% market share and sold mostly to women. As the dangers of tobacco smoking became clearer, people started switching to cigarettes. Marlboro and Leo Burnett ad agency came up with the idea of using authentic cowboys to sell tobacco. Within a few years, Marlboro became the leading brand of cigarettes.
Four of the cowboys shot in the Marlboro ads eventually died of smoking related diseases leading to the name "cowboy killers" for this ad success.
