How well do the two main characters hold up?
In this movie the plot hangs on two best friends of unlikely friendship that end up interlocked into a mystery after one of them goes missing on a business meeting. Stephanie Smothers plays the conservative querky type-A single mom, do it all. She works on her own mom's vlog and meets a new mom that enters the group. The new mom Emily Nelson, who is a high-power, working mom with a high executive role at a fashion company. Each mother compliments the other. Emily has all the power, but is kind of failing as a mother with her 10 hr a day job that takes her away frequently. Stephanie seems to have it all except a real job, so creates her own vlog on YouTube (we assume). Being a vlogger myself, I knew I had to see this movie to see how they covered a vlog channel.
So how does the story flow?
After the first act of introduction of the characters, we start to learn that Emily has a mysterious role at her company and is shy around cameras for some reason. This comes into full force in the third act of why she is trying to hide her identity in a world of social media, YouTube and other open society we live in. Later we find out that Emily gets murdered in a lake, so Stephanie begins to investigates. Here is where the story turns into a whole new direction and feel. In the final act we come to the conclusion of the mystery as all the clues start to fall in place. Story wise all the elements fall into place and there's not a lot of crap like in the Equalizer 2 that has nothing to do with the plot. Here there is misdirection, but mainly in the point of we don't know and people are pretending to be who they are not.
Does it work as a comedy?
There is this nice interplay between all the characters who have their quirks from conservative nerd mom to live dangerously mom interactions. Another fun element is the children have some great lines in the film to really surprise the audience in the reactions. The husband is this lost character, who deeply loves his wife who is a mystery to him. Of course, in the end he starts to come under investigation after his wife disappears and then turns up dead. I think he is seen as a secondary character around the women. There were some other great lines from the scheming moms at the day center talking crap about the two main characters.
Are the parts you would change in the movie?
Overall, no. I'm not saying its more than a one time fun comedy/mystery, but its very enjoyable. I could find no flaws in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I had low expectations being a chick flick, but it holds it own for humor.
Have you done art about a close friendship?
I think the closest art I did was on the Hunger Games connection between the two sisters Katniss and Primrose. That movie hangs around this strong family relationship with other peripheral love interests similar to how the men play side roles in this movies. In my art, I dive deeper to reflect the Hunger Games connection to today's world of globalism, CC TV and other elements of imperialism that exist already.
