In 1393, the Ottoman Empire lay siege to the Bulgarian Empire capital city of Tarnovo. After 3 months, the city was captured and the Bulgarians lived another 484 years under foreign rule until Russian general defeated the Turks. In 1908, Bulgaria was finally free and then entered the cold war. The colors of the painting represent the purple and yellow in the city's flag.
