Rating: PG-13, time: 1hr 55min, Director: Scott Derrickson, Cast on IMDb What did you think of Benedict Cumberbach as Dr. Strange? I thought it was well done and actually looked like the comic book hero. In so many Marvel movies they pick some of the most unbelievable people to play say Spiderman by Tobey Macguire. Tobey didn't look anything like Peter Parker of the comic. Benedict definitely looks the part, so it rings true to the comic. How did people think of Dr. Strange the comic? Well, when it first debuted with the mystic powers was the same time LSD was becoming popularized, so these acid heads thought Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were dropping acid. Also the comic had led the way into Eastern mysticism right before its popularity in the 1960s. Another connection to the movie was the destruction of the Sanctum Sanctorum, which was actually how the comic books ended in the 80s. Also the lead villain Dormammu was the lead villain in the original comics as well. One difference is that in the movie Dr. Strange returns the amulet Eye of Agamotto to its resting place while in the comic it is eternally part of the costume along with the cloak of Levitation. So what did you think of the multi dimensions in the film? Definitely adds to the cool factor in the film. Kind of like Matrix on crack, which makes sense as its much more magical world than in the Matrix. I mean how creative would a computer be? It could duplicate reality, but likely that's all. Its one of the reason the film was made since it would have these mystic worlds that previously only could exist as a comic book. How about the supporting villain Kaecilus played by Mads Mikkelson? His character is assumed to be the villain yet he reveals an internal truth about the Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton that causes Dr. Strange and allies to doubt the goodness in the Ancient One. This guy has starred in many villain roles like Hannibal, the Hunt, Casino Royale. The makeup kind of eradicates his subtle sense of evil in his eyes. Its great for the comic look, but takes away the nice subtlety of his eyes he's played in other characters. How do you think of supporting actrice Rachel Adams playing Christine - Dr. Strange on/off girlfriend?
It gets to the core of Dr. Strange being this super cocky neuro-surgeon that loses his whole life. She plays up to that role well since it defines Dr. Strange before he becomes a super hero. It's nice she has a much more natural brunette hair, since she's always dying her hair blond. I can't stand that in Hollywood and Fox news with endless fake blonds. Just live with your real hair unless a role calls for it. Her role in Wedding Crashers really set the stage for her. All in all its a fun film to see the comic book brought to life. The other fun thing is to see how they sneak in a cameo by Stan Lee into every Marvel comic movie.
