Rating: R, Time: 2hr 8 min, Director: Gavin O'Connor, Cast on IMDb What did you think of the splitting of times in the movie? This is an interesting way to show the movie as you build up why the accountant, played by Ben Affleck, became this amazing accountant for the mafia and trained killer at the same time. What did you think of the childhood of the accountant? This really added the spice of how a boy turns into this mafia type of accountant, who has great killer training as well. Having a psyops CIA type of father really pushes him and his brother to the limits of toughness in training, fighting and shooting. It also shows of one choice that led the boys to the darkside of life and being total badasses as a way of life. How does the autism of the accountant come into play? Well, it really adds this interesting element in that it is a difficult type of personality to deal with: isolationism, overly focus on tasks, not dealing with light well, etc. The character has overcome the autism with brutal training which he continues to this day. Another characteristic is high number fluency and task completion, which makes for excellent analysis capabilities. What did you think of the splitting of times in the movie? This is an interesting way to show the movie as you build up why the accountant, played by Ben Affleck, became this amazing accountant for the mafia and trained killer at the same time. The viewer is taken along with the ride to see what happens. There is more mystery added to the story as you see how the childhood of the accountant overcomes his disability and uses his talents from the same “disability” to really succeed in life. What kind of surprises were there in the movie? One of the surprises, was that the accountant takes a side job to lay off the heat of the police. Initially, I thought this would be a side story before the action starts, when it turns out to be the basis of the film’s action in present day. Another turn of events was how the movie ends, kind of where it starts in his childhood so we have that full circle closure in the story. In the film he analyzes 15 years of financials in one night, is this realistic? Not really, it likely would take several days on just the numbers and weeks on the actual document reading. That said, the top guys in the fields CFOs generally can read numbers literally how the accountant does in the film. I personally saw a CFO scan a high level financial statement down to the detail and spot the errors that most analysts would do with Excel to check. What did you think of the firm accountant played by Anna Kendrick? Well her part is quite limited since the accountant being autistic is a man of few words. Her main interaction was in the analysis of financials scene at the corporate office. She is fairly believable in the part and has a funny black jack history they add to the plot. It’s a subtle throw of respect to Rainman and Dustin Hoffman’s character. They never develop a possible love story with the accountant, but maybe that was the limit of his autism. How crucial was the black bag jail roommate played by Jeff Tambor?
Well as the accountant is trained by his father in childhood, Francis trains the accountant in where the mafia live and how to work for them. He is basically the second teacher in his life to turn him into the accountant and the reason he gets out of jail as well. How well did the movie play out? I really enjoyed seeing how they would merge the numbers guy with an assassin type of character. It seemed implausible, but they did a great job with good actors. It was interesting to see how the character reacts having autism in each of the scenes. I think only truly math nerds may appreciate how gifted some people are with numbers, which are essentially just another language. The training the accountant receives from his father, I’m not really sure he could overcome his autism this way, but what do I know.
